Red shiso, or Perilla frutescens, is a popular Japanese herb that is a member of the mint family. Red shiso is grown as a staple in Japanese cuisine and added extensively in various recipes as a herb. Shiso is a medium-growing perennial herb that can be grown as an annual in temperate climates. Red shiso herb is high in vitamin C, A, iron and antioxidants. The deep red-purple colour of the plant is due to the anthocyanin pigment which has antibacterial and antiviral properties. Red shiso can be used fresh or cooked. You can add it to your salads as a garnish or add julienned red shiso leaves to other vegetable and rice-based dishes.
