Red romaine lettuce is a medium sized and compact variety of with leaves forming a loose head. The burgundy red coloured wrinkled leaves of the lettuce add a rich crunch to every recipe. The leaves have juicy, mild and earthy flavour notes. The elongated leaves of red romaine lettuce vary from deep red to purple and green in colour at the top with off white to pale yellow rib at the centre. Originally grown in the Mediterranean, Red romaine lettuce is an essential for a Caesar Salad or mesclun mix. You can consume the harvested leaves raw, braised or slightly boiled since it can tolerate some heat while cooking. Red romaine lettuce is a good source of Vitamins A, C, K, iron, fibre, potassium and folate.
Planting instructions
Directly sow red romaine lettuce seeds at a depth of 3 mm and cover with loose soil. The soil must be worked prior to planting since the seeds prefer fertile and moist soil. Ensure that the seeds are being planted in a place with plenty of sun throughout the day. You can even try adding some seaweed fertilizer or compost tea to propagate healthy growth. The seeds should start germinating in 10-12 days after sowing.

Leaf dropping and powdery mildew and bottom rot are common fungal problems that can affect the lettuce leaves. Diluted neem spray can be one way to tackle this problem. Moreover, slugs and snails can also start eating away the lettuce leaves if not removed manually.

Lettuce requires nutrition rich, well draining fertile soil to grow well. The soil can be amended with some compost tea.
