Growing Requirements
Pests
Like all plants, Ixia is susceptible to pests, diseases, and other problems. The most common pests include aphids, which cause leaves to die and discolour, and honeydew excrement, which attracts ants and other pests. To get rid of aphids, you can spray them with a garden hose, use soap or neem spray, or lure predatory insects into your garden to get rid of them.
soil
Ixia plants need loose, well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Thoroughly remove weeds, loosen the soil by digging at least a spade depth, and prepare the soil by adding old animal manure or compost. Bury organic matter in heavy soil to loosen it up and allow roots to grow freely. Make sure weeds do not grow until planting.
spot
Ixia plants grow best in full sun. Choose a spot that gets at least 6 hours of sun every day.
temperature
The ideal soil temperature for ixia bulbs ranges from 20° to 30°C.
watering
Ixia plants may require watering during the growing season. Water when the soil is dry to about 2 inches below the surface (try to scrape the soil off with your finger). Water abundantly in the early morning or evening. Avoid watering plant leaves to prevent fungal disease.
how to harvest
Ixia flowers in about 120-150 days. If you are growing ixia as a cut flower, use sharp scissors or pruning shears to cut the stems as long as possible, remove the lower leaves, and immediately place the stems in a clean bucket of water. During the growing season, withered or cut Ixia flowers bloom regularly. Use sharp pruning shears or scissors with the longest handles to snip off the flowers you are picking, or cut off dead flowers.
