What else can remind one of the sweet summer days more than sunflowers swaying in the gardens? Sunflower or Helianthus is popular around the world for its large attractive blooms, oil extract and seeds. The name Helianthus is derived from two words, Helio meaning, sun and Anthus meaning flower. Hence the name Sunflower. The large flower heads of the Sunflower plant follow the direct rays from the sun. The plant has a thick, erect stem with a large golden-yellow flower at the top. Sunflower grows best in locations with full sun. Their resistance to pests, good heat tolerance makes them an ideal summer flower. Pollinators like bees and small birds are attracted to the sunflower bloom and they make for a great cut-flower.
Planting instructions
Sunflowers prefer 6 to 8 hours of sunlight to grow well. Sunflower seeds are best sown directly in the soil when the soil temperature ranges between 15-20 °C. Plant the seeds about 1 inch deep in the soil.
In case the soil where you are planting the seeds is slightly sandy, it is better to sow the seeds at least 2 inches deep. Sunflower plant will develop long tap-roots over time, hence it is important that the potting soil is loose and well-draining.
Cover the seeds with another layer of loose soil. Once the first seedlings appear, thin them to about 2 feet distance. In case your area also experiences strong winds, some support along the length of the plant is always a good idea.
Growing Requirements
Pests
Fungus, downy mildew, phoma blight, leaf spotting, and sunflower necrosis are some of the common issues one may face while growing sunflowers. Cleaning the sowing area thoroughly prior to the plantation, curbing excessive watering, removing affected plants, and using organic need oil is advised to manage these issues.
soil
Sunflowers thrive in slightly acidic soils with a pH ranging between 6 and 7.5. Ensure that the potting soil isn’t too compact since the tap-root of the sunflower plant will require well-dug, loose soil to develop well.
spot
Find a sunny spot that receives 6 to 8 hours of sunlight every day to plant sunflower seeds.
temperature
Germination temperature of 21 to 30 °C is ideal for sunflower seeds.
watering
While the plants are small, start watering close to the roots to keep the soil constantly moist. Once the plant develops, start watering thoroughly a few times a week to encourage strong deep roots. Water early in the morning so that the foliage has sunlight throughout the day to dry off and not develop any fungal diseases.
how to harvest
For cut flowers, harvest the sunflower blooms early in the day to avoid wilting. As cut flowers, sunflowers can last at least a week in the water.
