Gomphrena globosa or globe amaranth is a popular flower variety for cut flower gardens and borders. The clover-like button flowers can keep blooming late into summer when planted early in spring. A low-growing annual, the gumball gomphrena flowers make for great cut flowers and are ideal for use in potpourri when dried. Gomphrena blooms are also relatively long-lasting than other cut flowers, making them a good choice for summer centrepieces.
Planting instructions
Plant gomphrena seeds in well-drained rich soil at a depth not exceeding ¼ inches covered with loosely packed soil.
Under ideal conditions, the seeds will germinate in 2 to 3 weeks.
Ensure proper drainage when growing these flowers in containers since excess moisture can deter germination.
Growing Requirements
Pests
Although Gomphrena is mostly free of pests and diseases. However, overwatering may cause powdery mildew. It’s best to water the topsoil layer near the base of the plant when it feels dry on the touch.
soil
Average to rich well-drained soil with pH ranging between 5-6. The plant growth may be stunted in clay soil.
spot
Pick a sunny spot that receives 5-7 hours of sunlight every day. Lack of sunlight may cause the plant to grow too slender.
temperature
The ideal soil temperature for germination of seeds must range between 22 to 27℃. Once the seedlings have established, allow full sun for well-rounded growth.
watering
Keep the planted soil bed evenly moist for proper growth.
how to harvest
Gomphrena blooms will get ready for cut flowers in 55 to 65 days after germination. Pinch back on young blooms to encourage bushier plant growth and more flowering. Due to its height, Gomphrena is also ideal for container growing.
