First introduced in the late 60s by Dr Henry Munger at Cornell University, Cucumber marketmore has become a favourite of the home gardeners the world over. The fresh and crispy flavour and mildly sweet taste make this long and dark green cucumber variety ideal for adding into a number of preparations. The cucumber marketmore is popular as a slicer cucumber variety due to its smooth fruits. The dark green-skinned fruit grows on 4 to 6 feet long vines and the average length of the cucumber fruit varies from 7-10 inches.
Planting instructions
It’s recommended to sow the seeds directly in the garden outdoors. However, to get an early start on the season, the seeds can be started indoors after the spring frost has passed. Sow the seeds at a depth of 1 inch in rich well-drained soil. The seedlings will emerge in 10 to 14 days under ideal conditions. Add supports for vines as soon as there are healthy shoots on each growing mound. Cucumber marketmore fruits grow on shoots. Hence it’s important to prune the shoots wisely.
Growing Requirements
pests & diseases
Some common pests that can affect cucumber plants include aphids, cabbage looper, beetles, cutworms and thrips. Use a diluted neem oil spray to rid your plants of these pests. Moreover, some fungal diseases like leaf blight, damping off, leaf spot, downy mildew can creep up in case there is a lack of proper ventilation in the growing area.
soil
Cucumber marketmore will grow well in well-draining average soil with a pH ranging from 6.5 to 7.5.
spot
Cucumber plants are very sensitive to cold and must be planted in full sun for ideal growth.
temperature
The ideal soil temperature for germination ranges from 20 to 30°C.
watering
Due to their shallow root system, cucumbers require ample soil moisture to grow well. Mulch around the planted site to retain moisture and avoid frequent watering. Avoid overhead watering since that may lead to fungal diseases in the plant.
how to harvest
Cucumber marketmore variety will get ready to harvest in 60 to 70 days after the first true leaves appear after sowing. Once the dark green cucumber fruits are 8 inches long, it’s best to harvest them since they can turn bitter if left too long on the vine. Snip the cucumber from the shoot leaving some part of the shoot behind. Keep harvesting the fruits regularly all season long to promote more growth.
