Clarkia Elegans Double Flower is a hardy annual flower that is relatively easy to grow in home gardens. Clarkia hails from Onagraceae family of flowering plants, native to North America. This flower looks beautiful as hedge cover & as cut flowers. Bright shades of red, pink, & white, scarlet bulb of flowers create a densely filled flower bush that appears pleasingly elegant frilly, crepe-like look. The flower bulb is spectacularly large with scattered foliage and reddish tone in the stems which also makes for cut flowers that last comparatively longer. The plant grows to about 20 to 22 inches in full sun. The flower has been named after the great explorer Captain William Clark of the Lewis & Clark expedition fame to the Americas.
Planting instructions
Clarkia is sown the best after the last frost of spring is over. The direct sowing method is the way to go with these delicate plants since they don’t take well to transplanting. Pick a sunny area and well-drained soil to plant Clarkia seeds.
Gently sprinkle the seeds on the soil and allow them to germinate. This is known as the Surface Broadcast Method. Keep the soil moist until the seedlings start to form leaves. Thin the plants to 9 to 12 inches apart once the second set of leaves begin to grow from the seedlings.
To encourage flower growth, make sure that your garden is weed-free. Plant Clarkia seeds in an area of 3 to 6 feet wide if you wish to attract pollinators.
Growing Requirements
soil
Clarkia flowers does relatively well in deep, rich soil & will grow extensively in full or partial sun. Keep the soil moist until germination and which may take anywhere between 8 to 12 days. Always remember to water the soil before sowing and not pour water after sowing.
spot
The flower must be planted in full or partial sun for all around growth.
temperature
Sow the seeds in temperature ranging between 20 to 25°C(68 to 77°F)
watering
Keep watering frequently until the seeds have germinated. Thereafter, keep the watering frequency to alternate day since the roots of Clarkia flowers adapt well to growing conditions & do not require extensive watering.
how to harvest
If you are planning to cut the Clarkia flowers and keep them in vases, pots etc., make sure that you transfer them immediately to water since prolonged exposure of cut stems to dry environment can damage the flowers.
