Here's a quick chat we had with her:
1. How did you start gardening?
I started Gardening while in Danbury, CT, USA in 2010. I started with coriander leaves, mint, tomatoes and chillies from the nearby Walmart garden centre. My interest in cooking and wanting to harvest fresh herbs from my patio is what inspired me to start gardening. My parents and grandmother also have been gardening for several years...so I learnt a lot from them during my initial days in gardening.
2. What are some of your favourite plants to grow in the garden?
I started with a vegetable garden and expanded to other plants. I love fruit trees from which I can harvest fruits during the season and enjoy a healthy snack with my family.
3. What are some of the plants that you’ve not had as much success with?
I haven't had much luck with calatheas and succulents...though I still have a few in my garden.
4. Are there any new plants on your wishlist?
I recently purchased a couple on my wishlist - Champaca Magnolia, Avocado & Nagpur Orange. But I'm always looking to add more plants to our garden.
5. What would you like to say to our new gardeners?
Always start small. I started with 3-4 plants and purchased saplings. The next year I tried growing a few like beans and eggplant from seed which was successful. Every year, I like to try something new.
6. Any gardening hack you want to share with us?
Whenever purchasing a new plant from the nursery, try to learn a few tips from the gardeners at the nursery on how to care for the plant. It's also necessary to watch newly purchased/potted plants regularly. The plant will show us if it is stressed by brown/shedding/withered leaves or that it is happy by signs of new growth.
7. Any particular Instagram accounts you follow for inspiration?
https://www.instagram.com/1500sqft_gardener
They have an amazing garden with trees loaded with different varieties of fruits and a lot of birds visiting their garden.
8. Any suggestions to share with other gardening enthusiasts?
Please grow as many plants or trees in your neighbourhood as possible. It would also be great if we could stand together against the cutting down of several trees that are over 100 years old stating the excuse of "development".
