The sun-loving verbena flower hails from the Verbenaceae family and is a native to the Americas and Asia. The bright colour of the verbena flower that blooms all season long makes them gardeners’ joy. They look just as good in garden beds as they do spilling from the hanging baskets or pots. Verbena flowers can also partially tolerate some drought which makes them easy to care for. The fern-like foliage in dark green colour creates a nice contrasting effect that adds to the appeal of this flower. Verbena flowers usually bloom as a perennial in warm tropical or subtropical regions and as an annual in relatively colder regions.
Planting instructions
Sow verbena seeds in well-draining soil about ¼ inches deep and cover the potted area with loose soil. Water the area evenly keeping the top layer of the soil moist to touch.
Dark and moist conditions will be conducive for germination which may take up to three weeks. Once seedlings appear, thin the plants to about 10 to 12 inches apart.
Composted soil usually works best for Verbena. Verbena flowers are also great companions to salvia flowers.

Small spider mites, aphids, snails, thrips can be a threat to the verbena flowers which can be managed with organic neem spray. Fungal infections leaf spotting, powdery mildew etc can be managed by managing watering well and letting the foliage dry after watering.

Choose well-drained soil mixed with natural compost or leaf mould to plant your verbena flowers. Heavy clay soil will eventually lead to root rot.

A sunny spot that receives 6 to 8 hours of sunlight through the day will be ideal for growing verbena flowers.

Due to their small size, verbena flowers can not be used as cut flowers. However, they have beautiful blooms through spring to fall which look great in ground cover, hanging baskets attracting butterflies to your garden. Deadheading faded flowers will encourage new blooms.
