With mild mustard flavour and deep green spoon-shaped leaves, Tatsoi is a close relative of its mustard cousins including Brussels sprouts. A native of ancient China and Japan, Tatsoi is a non-heading cut and come again variety of Asian Greens. The low growing plant produces a small bundle of small spoon-shaped leaves with a glossy texture and pale green and yellow stems. Tatsoi is a versatile variety of leafy greens that can either be consumed raw or cooked. Raw Tatsoi leaves have a subtly nutty flavour note with a sweet finish while on cooking the leaves tend to develop a spinach-like earthy taste. Tatsoi greens are a good source of folate, calcium, potassium and vitamins, A, C and K. Tatsoi pairs well with most salad greens including spinach, mizuna, arugula and cress. Grow Tatsoi next to other leafy greens like lettuce, mustard, curly endive etc.
Planting instructions
Tatsoi seeds can be directly planted outside or started indoors. Although they are their most flavourful in cold weather, extremely cold temperatures can cause early bolting in the plant. Sow the seeds in nitrogen-rich well-draining soil at a depth of ¼ inches. Seeds will start to germinate in 10-21 days after sowing depending on soil and weather conditions. Thin the seedlings 10 to 12 inch apart for good plant growth.
