Sweetcorn is a summer annual that is best grown in the warmer months. A member of the Gramineae family, sweetcorn is a mix between a grain crop and a vegetable. The individual stalk of the corn plant grows up to 4 to 6 feet and produces a cob of seeds called kernel which is consumed raw or cooked. The cylindrical cob of sweetcorn is bound in a light green husk with tassels coming out at the top. Freshly harvested sweetcorn kernels are succulent and extremely sweet with an almond-like aftertaste. If the corn is left on the plant to mature after this stage, the kernels will lose their sweetness. Sweetcorn is a good source of vitamin A and beta carotene and can be paired with tomatoes, herbs, and beans etc.
Planting instructions
Add well rotted manure or compost to the planting soil prior to planting. Sow corn seeds at 1 inch depth in loose, well-draining soil. Corn seeds will take 15 to 20 days once the soil temperature is around 25°C. For perpetual harvest plant corn batches after every 3 to 4 weeks.
Growing Requirements
pests & diseases
Gray leaf spot, rust, smut, downy mildew, ear rot, leaf blight are some fungal diseases that can affect your corn plant. In addition to this, pests like snails, aphids, earworms, cutworms, flea beetles, spider mites can also attack corn plants. Use row covers, maintain a prudent watering schedule and use organic solutions like neem oil to address these problems.
soil
Well-drained loose soil with pH ranging from 5.8 to 6.8 is ideal for growing sweetcorn. Sweetcorn plants will also benefit from high nitrogen content in soil.
spot
Plant corn seeds in full sun.
temperature
The ideal soil temperature for germination ranges between 20 to 25°C.
watering
Keep the planting site for sweetcorn plants evenly moist during the growing stage since dry soil may lead to wilting.
how to harvest
Sweetcorn will get ready for harvest once the tassels on the top turn dark brown in colour. Twist the cob downward by picking it from the ear and plunge into cold water to retain the sweetness.
