Probably one of the most colorful mixes of edible flowers, Swiss Giants mix is a large flowered pansy variety of edible flowers that covers a myriad of colors of the spectrum like blue, orange, white, purple, red and yellow with a very dark smear around the centre of the flower. Swiss giant flowers grow upto 6 to 9 inches and hardy annual winter specials which takes about 16 weeks to bloom. These flowers have a very mild flavour and make sweet as well as savoury dishes look sumptuous as a garnish on the top. If you want sweet flower petals, these flowers can be sugared and used for decorations. Swiss giants mix prefers full sun or partial shade for growth. You can sow these flowers from February to April indoors and May to August while planting outdoors and are ready to flower from May to October while sown in rich and moist soil.
Planting instructions
Even though Pansies like full or partial sun, they prefer cooler temperatures to thrive. The ideal spot for Pansy plants should get the morning sun but should move to partial shade during the heat of the afternoon sun. Sow the seeds about 7 to 12 inches apart initially. Once the seeds grow to about 6 to 9 inches tall, thin them to 9 to 12 inches apart.
Pansy seeds should be planted indoors first, at least 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost of spring. To get an early spring and summer bloom, start the seeds in late winter. If you want a late fall and winter bloom, then start the planting process in the late summer. Regular watering is crucial for Pansies since under-watering is one of the main reasons for failure while growing these beautiful flowers.
Using an all-purpose fertilizer will help your Pansy plants to grow tremendously. To encourage recurring blooms, remove the faded or dead flowers. This will increase the blooming period significantly.
