Lemony flavour mixed with the taste of basil is all you need to know about this variety of basil. Lemon basil is an annual plant that grows upto 12-15 inches in ideal growing conditions. The small and light green leaves of lemon basil are smooth and contain some veins across the surface of the leaves. When left to flower during late summer, the plant also produces lemon-scented, very small white-coloured flowers. This variety of basil can be used in raw as well as in cooked applications.
Planting instructions
Plant Lemon Basil Seeds in well-drained soil with full sunlight exposure. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and maintain a consistent watering schedule to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Provide support for the plants as they grow to ensure healthy development.
Growing Requirements
pests & diseases
Protect your lemon basil plants from common pests like aphids and whiteflies by regularly inspecting and removing affected leaves. Prevent fungal diseases by avoiding overhead watering and ensuring proper air circulation around the plants.
soil
Lemon basil thrives in well-drained, fertile soil with a pH level between 6.0 and 7.0. Amend the soil with organic compost to improve nutrient content and drainage.
spot
Choose a sunny spot in your garden or balcony where the lemon basil plants can receive at least 6-8 hours of sunlight daily.
temperature
Maintain a warm temperature range between 70°F to 85°F (21°C to 29°C) for optimal growth. Protect the plants from frost, as they are sensitive to cold temperatures.
watering
Water the lemon basil plants regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot and ensure proper drainage.
how to harvest
Harvest lemon basil leaves once the plants reach a height of 6-8 inches. Pinch off individual leaves or cut stems as needed. It’s a cut-and-come-again variety, hence right type of harvesting and pruning will encourage more growth. Incorporate fresh lemon basil into salads, soups, sauces, vinaigrettes, and beverages for a burst of citrusy flavour that enhances any dish. Lemon basil can also be used in baking cookies, muffins etc. for fresh citrusy flavours.
