Double Dark Red Lotus Bulbs produce breathtaking blooms with layers of rich crimson petals and a full, double-petalled form that floats gracefully above round, waxy green leaves. These dramatic flowers can span up to 20 cm across and are a spectacular addition to water gardens, large containers, or traditional koi ponds. Native to Asia, lotuses have long been revered for their serene beauty and cultural symbolism. These varieties thrive in still water and bloom from early summer through monsoon, adding elegance and movement to aquatic spaces. Perfect for home gardeners looking to create a tranquil pondscape or add an exotic touch to balcony water containers.
Planting instructions
File one end of the bulb gently to break its hard outer shell and trigger sprouting. Start the bulb in a wide container filled with heavy soil, covering it lightly, then add shallow water. Once sprouted, submerge the container 5–10 cm deep in a pond or large tub.
Growing Requirements
Pests
Generally hardy, but may face aphids or fungal issues if the water is stagnant. Ensure clean water and good air circulation.
soil
Use heavy garden soil or aquatic plant mix; avoid light or sandy soils that may float or cloud water.
spot
Ideal for sunny pond edges, water gardens, or large tubs placed in full sun (6–8 hours daily).
temperature
Lotus thrives in warm temperatures above 20°C; in colder regions, bulbs should be stored indoors over winter.
watering
Keep the container submerged in water once leaves appear. Ensure water levels remain consistent, especially in dry weather. Water is maintained naturally in ponds. If kept in containers, top up evaporated water regularly. For sprouting, change water every 2–3 days until planted in a pond.
how to harvest
Harvest flowers when just starting to open early in the morning. Cut with a long stem and place in clean, cool water. Use with other bold flowers like lilies or tropical foliage. For longer vase life, change water daily and keep out of direct sunlight. If kept in a pond, faded blooms can be trimmed to encourage more flowering.
