These exquisite bulbs burst forth with petite star-shaped blooms that showcase a radiant lemon-yellow hue, casting a delightful glow in your garden. Standing at a modest 10-12 inches in height, these blooms create a charming focal point in flower beds, rock gardens, or containers. Not only do they add a burst of sunshine to your outdoor space, but their long-lasting blooms make them a fantastic choice for cut flower arrangements, infusing your home with the essence of a blossoming garden.
Planting instructions
When planting directly in the ground, dig a hole about 2-3 times as deep as the height of the bulb. For most Allium varieties, this means planting them around 4-6 inches deep. If you're planting Allium bulbs in pots or containers, make sure your container is at least 6-8 inches deep to allow room for root growth. Plant the bulbs at the same depth as in the ground, about 4-6 inches deep.
Growing Requirements
Pests
Alliums are generally pest and disease resistant, but keep an eye out for onion flies and thrips. You can discourage these pests by planting Alliums near other repellent plants like marigolds or garlic.
soil
Alliums thrive in well-draining soil with good organic matter. Sandy loam or loamy soil is perfect. Make sure the soil pH is between 6.0 and 7.0, slightly acidic to neutral.
spot
Choose a sunny spot for your Alliums. They need at least 6-8 hours of sunlight daily. Plant them where they won't be shaded by taller plants.
temperature
Alliums prefer cooler temperatures. Plant them in the fall, a few weeks before the first frost for a spring bloom. Spring-planted bulbs can also be successful.
watering
Alliums don't like to sit in waterlogged soil, so ensure your soil drains well. Water the bulbs when you plant them, and then let the rain take care of most of their moisture needs. Only water during dry spells to keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy.
how to harvest
When the Allium blooms are in full flower and the colour is vibrant, you can cut the stems for beautiful bouquets. Use clean, sharp shears to cut the stems about 1-2 inches above the ground. Be mindful not to damage the bulb or the remaining foliage. Place your cut blooms in a vase with fresh water, and they can last for several days, adding a unique touch to your flower arrangements.
